Noise induced hearing loss in Agriculture
Noise induced hearing loss in Agriculture Let's talk about it
We are fortunate to live in an incredible part of the world that is rich with agriculture & farming. However, this means we see many a farmer suffering hearing issues related to their long term exposure to general agriculture related noise. Did you know that a study by the University of Sydney showed that it only takes 2.5 hours of operation at one time of a header, grain auger, angle grinder or motorcycle before damage can occur? This damage can be permanent, progressive, painless and most importantly preventable. A few ways to minimise the impact of hearing loss due to constant exposure to these noises are:
🚜 If possible, rearrange work areas to alter your proximity to loud machines or equipment.
🚜 Limit the time spent working close to loud machinery- try rotating work tasks.
🚜 Be familiar with the noise levels of equipment, machinery and tasks on the farm by downloading a noise meter app on your phone.
🚜 Wear hearing protection such as ear plugs or ear muffs & be familiar with the sound level conversion rating of those items.
